There are two different methods of ovarian stimulation (ovulation induction). The first is used for women who are not ovulating spontaneously (irregular or infrequent menstruation). In such cases, the aim is to stimulate the release of one egg a month. This is most easily done by prescribing fertility pills. If this medication is not effective, then injections of a small dose of gonadotropins may be necessary. In the second situation, the woman is ovulating spontaneously but has unexplained infertility or her partner has mild male-factor infertility. In such a case, the aim of ovulation induction is to stimulate the production of 2 to 4 large follicles, so that several eggs will be released. This is most easily achieved by injections of gonadotropins. This treatment is combined with intra uterine insemination (IUI) to bring the sperm closer to the egg.

The Oaks Clinic provides scans for tracking of a developing follicle (egg) and allows you tell the period when it is likely that you will conceive. Usually these scans are needed when you are placed on special fertility treatments.

Ovulation means the release of an egg from the ovaries in the middle of the menstrual cycle. Some women in their reproductive age might ovulate infrequently or not at all. Ovulation induction is a treatment which facilitates the release of the eggs from the ovaries, with the help of hormonal therapy. A very mild hormone medication is used to help produce 1-2 mature eggs in the ovaries.The growth of the follicles is monitored with ultrasound. Once the follicles have matured enough, the ovulation can be scheduled with a single hCG-hormone injection. The moment of ovulation injection can be timed with intercourse or insemination. This treatment requires that the ovarian tubes are open and the semen is of good quality. Donor sperm can also be used in insemination.Despite the mild hormone medication, it is possible that several follicles are produced, and the treatment must be terminated due to the risk of multiple pregnancies, or it can be converted into IVF-treatment. Hormonal therapy always involves a small risk of hyper stimulation, i.e. ovarian overstimulation, which explains the importance of ultrasound scans during the hormonal therapy.

Examinations prior to treatment.Examinations prior to the treatment aim at explaining the reasons why a natural conception does not occur. It is important to find the factors behind infertility, and the results determine the course of treatment.It is advisable to bring any previous results to the consultation session since they are all taken into account and new examinations will be carried out if necessary. The investigations need not to take a long time and the treatment can begin quite soon if the client so wishes.Female testsA doctor will plan an individually tailored schedule of examination depending on received data. The development and release of a female egg from the ovaries, determining whether the fallopian tubes are open and the structure of the uterus are important factors that need to be examined. Ultrasound is used to detect any abnormalities in the uterus, and this can often be done at the first appointment.Sometimes we need to do hysteroscopy, the visualization of the uterine cavity, and only very rarely laparoscopy, the visualization of the abdominal cavity. The maturing of eggs can also be detected with ultrasound, which is timed according to the estimated day of egg release during the menstrual cycle. A woman who does not have any contraindication for pregnancy or delivery can opt for fertilization treatment with donated eggs.The results of fertilization treatment with donated eggs are extremely good. Donated eggs enable the conception and the birth of a healthy child in many families when this is no longer possible with the woman’s own eggs.
