Dr Islam and Mayar were extremely friendly and patient with my questions from the first booking enquiry to the post-surgery follow-up. The nutritionist Dr Ziad, driver Waleed, nurses, and ward doctors were all lovely and made sure I knew where I could follow up with them if there were any issues (there were not). The hospital itself was clean and quiet and the gastric sleeve procedure has so far (two weeks in) not had any negative side-effects. Dr Islam and his team made this a very easy and worthwhile experience!

Gastric sleeve surgery, or a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure during which a part of the stomach is removed leaving the remaining part to function as a new smaller stomach. The stomach is an organ which functions as a temporary food reservoir and it also produces hormones, such as gastrin and ghrelin. Ghrelin is associated with the feeling of hunger. Therefore, the removal of a large portion of the pouch can favorably alter the hunger hormone production. After a gastric sleeve procedure a patient’s food intake is decreased and they feel full faster. It is a bariatric surgery, which helps patients to lose as much as 50 to 70 percent of their excess weight.

Even though obesity has been prevalent for ages, only recently has it been recognised as a disease of multifactorial origin. The first attempts to treat obesity for the sole purpose of weight loss began in 1950s, when jejunoileal bypasses were done to induce a state of malabsorption (a condition when nutrient absorption is impaired). Sleeve Gastrectomy is weight loss procedure aimed at permanently removing 75% of the stomach to make it smaller. This means you will only be able to eat small meals. After the operation, you will need to take a daily multivitamin tablet (can be bought over the counter), daily calcium and vitamin D tablet, daily iron tablet and 3-monthly Vitamin B12 injections via the GP.

I contacted Renew Bariatrics in October of 2020. I was approved for Gastric Bypass shortly after the initial contact. My coordinator, Marie, was very thorough and sent me all the necessary documents to get started. I was then sent detailed instructions for my pre-op and post-op diets. I had my surgery on December 15th of 2020. The process was so easy, Renew took care of everything. I flew in the day before surgery, the driver picked us up from our hotel the next day and took us over the border. When we reached the hospital, I was given forms to fill out and was taken back for blood work, X-rays, and EKG tests. After that, I was taken to my room where the surgeon/nursing staff came in to check on me, ask me questions and insert my IV. All a breeze. The hardest part was waiting and not getting anxious. Dr Green came in and told me how the surgery would go, told me about my test results and then we were ready. About an hour or so later, I was in the operating room. I woke up feeling yucky but I just had major surgery, so of course. Went back to my room where I stayed for the next two days. Went to the Real Inn after that for the night and went home the next day. The whole process was a breeze and I’d honestly do it again in a heartbeat. Renew and Dr Green saved my life and I’ll be forever grateful.
