About Dr Barbara Thurgood Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist

My name is Barbara. I am a chartered counselling psychologist and counsellor. I work with individuals who experience depression, anxiety, loneliness, relationship issues, loss, life transitions and stress of every day life. I have had continual success in helping people to discover a sense of personal resource and resilience in the face of adversity.

My consulting rooms are in Hampstead, NW3 and in Canary Wharf, E14.  I am registered with the British Psychological Society and the Health & Care Professions Council.

I am very pleased to hear from private individuals considering therapy. I also accept referrals from GPs and other professionals/organisations concerned with psychological support.

My clients often tell me that I am a very good listener. To me, two essentials are: an understanding of an issue from your unique personal perspective and providing time and space where you may explore and make sense of your experience.

The type of therapy I offer can be described as relational - integrative.  By this I mean that I deeply appreciate the healing value of therapeutic relationship in the process of overcoming your difficulties. Importantly, my extensive training as a counsellor and counselling psychologist has enabled me to draw on the most appropriate therapeutic approaches to suit your individual needs.  In other words, I consider that no single approach fits all, as all individuals are unique.

Before undertaking my career in psychology and psychotherapy, I set up and ran my own successful healthcare company. I believe that this particular professional background has equipped me to provide a balanced approach to a diverse range of concerns.

Areas of work

In my practice, I work on a one-to-one basis and offer brief or longer term therapeutic programmes individually tailored to suit your personal needs.

I can help with long standing difficulties, specific personal or/and professional dilemmas; or just to gain a sense of clarity and ease in everyday life.

While I work with a wide range of issues, I am particularly interested in working with middle-aged and older adults.  With these age groups much of my work focuses on feelings related to anxiety, loss, depression and/or the effect of ageing difficulties on how one relates to oneself and/or others and the world.  I recognise that the experience of growing older may be very different for each individual.

In particular, I am experienced in the following key areas:

  • anxiety
  • mid-life crisis
  • menopause
  • loss & depression
  • quality of relationships & attachment issues
  • work-place issues
  • family changes
  • psychological relationship to time
  • life transitions & developmental processes
  • coming to terms with chronic or terminal illness such as cancer, dementia or Parkinson’s disease
  • ageing issues such as: physical/psychological age-related changes; increased awareness of mortality and finitude
  • concerns with loneliness or dependence
  • planning for retirement
  • resilience

Since 2010, I have been a committed volunteer counsellor with the UK’s leading charity dedicated to later life – AGE UK, where I counsel people aged 55 years or older. Together with my colleagues from AGE UK I share the vision of supporting older people from all walks of life.
I encourage any individual to come for an initial session with me before they commit to a course of therapy.
