At Optegra we use the most advanced equipment for Laser Eye Surgery. All laser treatments involve the use of a laser to change the shape of your cornea and alter your eye’s focusing power. Making the procedure safer and more accurate with better results, and completely blade free for a faster recovery.

LASEK (laser-assisted epithelial keratomileusis) is a surface treatment that avoids the need to create a corneal flap. The total treatment takes around 10 minutes per eye.

It works by softening the thin upper layer of the cornea (1), called the epithelium, before moving it aside (3). An excimer laser (4) is then applied to the exposed tissue before the thin layer is put back in its original position (5). A special contact lens is then applied to protect the epithelium while it heals (6).

LASIK

Making the procedure safer and more accurate with better results, and completely blade free for a faster recovery.

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is the most common laser treatment performed worldwide and is usually a two-stage procedure. It takes around 10 minutes to treat each eye.

Once your eye has been anaesthetised, a femtosecond laser is used to create an extremely thin flap on your cornea (1). By using a laser instead of a blade, the flap can be created with greater precision and with minimal pain. The tissue under the flap is then reshaped using an excimer laser (2) before the flap is carefully placed back again (3).

The natural clouding of the lens, known as a cataract, causes problems with vision, contrast and glare. Using state-of-the-art laser and advanced IOL technology, cataracts can be removed with greater ease and replaced with IOLs that provide the best possible vision for your lifestyle needs.

The procedure requires you to attend the hospital for the day and is performed under local anaesthetic. Taking approximately 20 minutes: the cataract is removed by a technique called Phacoemulsification (ultrasound). The surgeon makes a small incision in your eye (2), softens the lens (3) and removes it through a small tube (4). An Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) customised from your eye is inserted to the replace the cataract lens that has been removed (5). At the end of your procedure a clear plastic shield may be placed over your eye to protect it.

RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange

If you have symptoms of age-related presbyopia, then laser eye surgery will not be suitable for you, but the most effective and permanent alternative solution is to have your natural lens replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). The availability of new premium IOLs allows your consultant to offer you the chance to see at all distances.

Past professional history
Prof Aslam gained his medical degree from Oxford University and subsequently trained as an eye surgeon in Manchester and Edinburgh. He completed advanced sub specialty training in medical disease of the retina at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in 2009. In his current role is actively involved in the development of the clinical trial unit in Manchester.

He completed his training with the most prestigious fellowship, at Moorfields Eye Hospital and specialises purely in treatment of Medical Retina disease. His first doctorate (DM) from Oxford University was in outcome measures after cataract surgery and he more recently gained a PhD from Heriot Watt University in interface technologies for which he was awarded the MacFarlane prize for best Ph.D research of the year amongst all science and art disciplines.
 
He is currently the UK National Institute for Health Research lead for Ophthalmology  for Greater Manchester which allows him to be at the cutting edge of all available treatments. He is involved in research in many branches of ophthalmology, particularly exploring the potential for computerised and technical enhancement of diagnosis and management of ophthalmic disease, with several  devices under development. He also has a specific research interest in prevention and management of macular degeneration, a topic for which he is regularly  an invited speaker at international conferences. He has over 60 peer reviewed publications, predominantly as lead author and is an investigator on multiple grants over the last 5 years in Manchester with involvement in commercial as well as with investigator lead studies. 

Prof Aslam is Director of the Manchester Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science MSc course, Director of the Manchester undergraduate Ocular Disease course, Editor of “Eye News” and Associate Editor of “Acta Ophthalmologica”.

He is involved in training Vitreoretinal Surgeons and Medical Retina Specialists worldwide, as part of the world renowned Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Vitreoretinal and Medical Retina Fellowship. He is one of the founders of the British Emergency Eye Care Society, for which he holds the position of Vice-President. Mr Dan Nolan is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Tameside Foundation Hospitals in Manchester.

He gained the fellowship of the Royal College (FRCSEd) in 1993. He gained further subspecialist training in the fields of paediatric ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, and in Squint and Neuro-Ophthalmology at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester and Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool.

He is a consultant at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, a tertiary university hospital. He is also an honorary lecturer of Manchester University. He sees patients with a variety of eye problems including glaucoma, retina and cataracts in his general clinic. He has established specialist clinics for patients with squint and neuro-ophthalmic problems. He is the only neuro-ophthalmologist in the private sector in the Greater Manchester region.

He is an accomplished cataract surgeon with more than 3000 surgeries to date. He is one of the consultants managing complex cataracts at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and one of the few with expertise in extracapsular cataract surgery needed for advanced cataracts. Ophthalmic trainees of Manchester Deanery attend his theatres to learn complex cataract surgery.

In the field of squints, he provides the final solution for many failed or complex squints customising and guaranteeing optimal outcome with adjustable stitches. He also has the expertise of treating squints with BT injection for those who are not suitable for correction by surgery.

In the field of neuro-ophthalmology he establishes the cause and provides treatment for many unexplained visual or eye problems related to nerves of the eye and brain. He has set up the sole biopsy service to diagnose temporal arteritis, a condition which can cause blindness, for central, north and south Manchester hospitals.

He is the only consultant ophthalmologist in the greater Manchester region with expertise in ultrasound diagnosis of eye diseases including different varieties of glaucoma, swollen optic nerves and eye cancers.

He is a clinical and educational supervisor, and trains doctors from the UK and abroad in the field of ophthalmology in general, and cataract surgery, squint and neuro-ophthalmology in particular. He is the audit lead for the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital ensuring high standard of care is provided.

He is an active researcher currently involved in drug trials for multiple sclerosis, lung and skin cancer. He has presented many scientific papers in national and international meetings. He has more than twenty publications in peer reviewed medical journals. He is a reviewer for the strabismus section of British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of International Strabismus Association, Societas Internationalis Pro Diagnostica Ultrasonica in Ophthalmologia, British and Irish Neuro-Ophthalmology Club.

Mr Zakieh completed medical school at Palacky University in Czech Republic in 1999. In 2004 he was awarded a Diploma of Specialisation in Ophthalmology by the Institute of Postgraduate Education within Health Care in Prague, Czech Republic.
