After Graduating from Glasgow University, Jim entered general practice. Following associate positions, latterly in Surrey, he became the principle of a general practice in Cheam in 1970 and practised as the principal of a multi-surgery NHS practice until 1983.
Following the award of his Masters in Periodontology in 1983, he established a periodontal referral practice in Cheam and divided his time between practice and his teaching post in the Department of Periodontology and Preventive Dentistry at Guys. In 1994 he was among the first candidates to be awarded MRDRCS and subsequently, he was recognised by the General Dental Council as a Specialist both in Periodontics and Prosthodontics.
Jim has wide experience of the various periodontal treatment modalities including all types of non-surgical periodontal therapy and the treatment of advanced cases utilising a range of periodontal surgical techniques. In addition, he has in-depth experience of assessing, planning and treating advanced restorative cases.
He has been involved with dental implants since 1992, initially within the department of Periodontology at Guys and subsequently in practice, and has experience in placing and restoring dental implants in diverse clinical cases. He has lectured at numerous clinical and research meetings on various aspects of Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Implantology.
In addition to his involvement in Ashley House, he is currently the Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher in the department of Periodontology at Kings College, Guys Campus, where he teaches post-graduate students preparing for MSc and MClin Dent degrees in Periodontology.
