What is TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment?

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. There are two temporomandibular joints on either side of the face.

What is the function of the temporomandibular joint?

The temporomandibular joint helps the jaws to move.

What are the disorders that affect the Temporomandibular Joint?

Temporomandibular Joint disorders include headaches, pain while opening and closing the mouth, difficulty is opening the mouth, the jaws getting stuck, problems in biting and fitting the two jaws together and jaw pain or tenderness.

How are Temporomandibular Joint disorders treated?

Temporomandibular joints are treated by prescribing pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications or anti-depressants. Dentists also fit mouth guards or oral splints to treat temporomandibular disorders. Ultrasound treatments and placing heat and ice packs are also recommended.  Minimally invasive procedures to remove fluid or other debris are performed. Steroids or neuromuscular relaxant injections are administered to treat disorders. Surgical procedures are performed if the disorder is not resolved using other procedures. Alternative healthcare therapies like acupuncture, yoga and meditation, and chiropractic care are also effective in treating TMJ disorders.

What care is required to prevent Temporomandibular Joint disorders?

Patients should not bite hard objects like pencils. They should not eat hard or chewy food products. They should relax and learn stress management. They should maintain correct posture. They should massage their jaw and temples. Patients should get a good night’s sleep. They should get a mouth guard fitted to prevent jaw clenching during sleep.

Every treatment is carried out with utter professionalism and the level of care is exceptionalCaz, UK, 21 07 21

First let me express I am a very nervous dental patient. I HATE dental pain. I have been a patient of Dr Mowlawi for several years now. Dr Mowlawi really puts me at ease when I visit. I have now had two fillings WITHOUT anaesthetic. Both times with no pain!! I have also had a couple of fillings with anaesthetic and on both occasions, I could feel my face again after a short period of time and never any pain. I cannot recommend Dr Mowlawi enough. Every treatment is carried out with utter professionalism and the level of care is exceptional. Very good value indeed.
