A dental implant is an artificial titanium tooth root which is screwed into the jaw bone through surgery. It replaces a missing or damaged natural tooth root. Today the majority of dental implants are made out of 98% pure titanium because of its strength and biocompatibility. The diameter can vary between 3 and 5 mm and the length between 10 and 15 mm, depending on the maxillary and the bone mass of the patient. Implant success is determined by its placement in the maxillary bone and its function. Nowadays implants carry a success rate of around 97%. The implants procedure is suited to replacing missing teeth. The patient must have enough bone mass where the tooth is missing to place the implant and ensure its osseo-integration. Once the osseo-integration made, a dental implant can last for the rest of your life. Dental implants are also used in prosthetic dentistry to support full maxillary restorations. A variation on the implant procedure is then the implant-supported bridge, or implant-supported denture. Implants are increasingly used to replace some kind of bridges and dentures that do not fit anymore and become uncomfortable.
