What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

It really was a pleasant & painless experienceLeeAnne, South Africa, 21 07 23

I had my wisdom tooth extracted yesterday, and believe me when I say I was nervous and anxious as I haven't had a dental procedure done in years. Dr Moosa & Dr Ismail & team made me feel so much at ease. Dr Ismail is amazing at what he does the way he explains everything and talks one through the process. Before I knew it my tooth was out and I didn't feel a thing, I couldn't believe it. It really was a pleasant & painless experience. Thank you Dr Moosa & Dr Ismail & team for what you have done for me. I'll never forget it...you guys are truly amazing.

They went above and beyond to make me feel comfortableRobert, US, 03 10 22

4 years and Satisfied! Dr. Hartshorne is one in a Million. The professionalism and friendliness of the whole team was outstanding. Undoubtedly the best dental-related experience I’ve ever had. From the first day I visited this office I’ve felt as though I’ve been cared for and treated in the best possible way. I had 5 Implants. They went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. The result from my dental implants was great.. about 8 months later, one tooth seemed to be a bit lose, but he had warned me that it rarely ever happens, but if it does, feel free to come in, we'll take care of it, and he did. Also note that the office and operating rooms are incredibly clean. I also found it nice that they do everything from the consultation to the procedure at the same place. Modern Equipment in a nice facility with a doctor that knows his job was a game changer for me. The Money, was worth my Smile. Every visit was like visiting friends

The treatment I received throughout was superbAndrea, South Africa, 04 05 23

I had the best treatments ever! Had to have 4 wisdom teeth removed of which 2 were impacted. The two were growing horizontally and were close to the nerves which could cause paralysis should anything go wrong. Plus,I had constant cysts in my mouth! No dentist wanted to extract it due to the risk but Dr Natha was up for the challenge. I was extremely nervous but Dr Natha and his assistant put me totally at ease. The treatment I received throughout was superb! Thank you Dr Natha and assistant, I will forever be grateful. God bless!
