Biography:
Obtained his Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin. He went on to dental school at the Washington School of Dental Medicine at St. Louis, and graduated on the Dean List in 1977. Dr. Hung has limited his practice to pediatric dentistry since his graduation. He was awarded Fellow of the American Society of Dentistry for Children in 1994. He also obtained his MBA from the University of British Columbia in 1984.

Dr. Hung has more than 30 years of experience with children dental public health. From St. Louis, Dr. Hung went to Saskatchewan, Canada, to be a dental consultant for the childrens program of the Saskatchewan government until 1979. From 1979 to 1984, he assumed the post of Dental Director at the Burnaby School District Dental program. He became the dental consultant for the Burnaby Health department and the Burnaby School District Dental program from 1984-2000 after he established a full time pediatric practice in Burnaby in 1984.

Dr. Hung is active in promoting dental public health in BC. He was the chairman of the dental health month of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC for a number of years. He has been a member of the VDDS since 1979, and was also a past director.

Dr. Hung is a clinical assistant professor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry. He has been teaching the pediatric program at UBC since 1981. He initiated the bussing program at UBC Dental School with Dr. Alan Richardson, and this program has become the backbone of pediatric training at UBC. He has also been on staff at the BC Childrens Hospital since 1985.

Monarch Pediatric Dental Centre (Burnaby) was was first founded in 1997, and Monarch Port Moody was opened in 2005. Monarch Surrey was opened in 2010.

He attended the University of British Columbia, earning his degree in Dentistry in 1993. Following Dental School, Dr. Kuah attended a 3 year program at the University of Connecticut Health Centre where he received his Diploma in Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Masters Degree in 1996. Finally, Dr. Kuah received his Diploma in Orthodontics from a 2 year program at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Kuah is the second dentist in B.C. to have specialized in both Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. He is both a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry and a Certified Specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in British Columbia. In addition to private practice, he was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia having taught both Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics to undergraduate dental students and clinical orthodontics training to Certified Dental Assistants. He has also been on medical staff at British Columbia Childrens Hospital since 1999. He speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dr. Kuah is a member of both the Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists, the Canadian and American Academies of Pediatric Dentists, and their respective provincial and local societies. He is also a Fellow of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (FRCD) in both Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Dr. Kuah joined the Monarch Group in 1998 as a pediatric dental associate. In 2000, he founded the Monarch Orthodontic Centre. Together with Dr. Farah Mawani and the Monarch Pediatric Dental Centre, Monarch Port Moody was opened in 2005.

Dr Mark Casafrancisco

Dr. Casafrancisco was born in Ontario, but grew up in Richmond, BC. He obtained his Bachelor of Science(Biochemistry) in 1999 at the University of British Columbia (U.B.C.) before he obtained his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree also at U.B.C. in 2005. A few highlights from his dental school training were a dental student exchange to Japan, and leading and enjoying promoting oral health at community health fairs that he enjoys doing presently.

Following dental school, Dr. Casafrancisco’s interest in travel and in public health led him to a 2.5 year dual program in Lexington, KY at the University of Kentucky where he received his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Master of Public Health in November 2007. Highlights of his tenure here were the “southern hospitality,” the Wildcats college basketball team, a medical mission trip to serve the underserved in Tiquisate, Guatemala, and special friendships gained.

Soon after his specialty training, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (F.R.C.D.C.) in December of 2007, a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry in B.C. (F.C.D.S. (B.C.)) and Member of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. as a pediatric dentist in January of 2008. In October of 2009, Dr. Casafrancisco endeavoured further and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. It was with great pride that he became a member and co-owner of the Monarch Family in February, 2010.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Casafrancisco is an Assistant Clinical Professor at U.B.C. teaching clinical pediatric dentistry to undergraduate dental students. He has been on medical staff at B.C. Children’s Hospital since 2008. He is a member of the Canadian and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the B.C. Society of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as the Canadian Dental Association.
