After leaving the Glasgow Academy School, he studied for a Bachelors degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) at Edinburgh University. Following graduation, he spent a year as a junior dental trainee in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, igniting a fascination for facial medicine and surgery. After completing this post, he returned to university to study medicine at St Andrews and Manchester Universities where he graduated as a medical doctor (MB ChB). Following registration, he undertook a three-year surgical training rotation as a Senior House Officer (SHO), and then extended this training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as the Senior SHO. He was then successful in becoming appointed as a Surgical Registrar in Australia where he worked at the world-renowned Sydney Head and Neck Cancer, and Melanoma Institute.
