Dr Stephen Annest

Biography:
Dr. Annest has been a member of Vascular Institute of the Rockies since its inception. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington. He completed his surgical residency at Albany Medical Center, Albany NY. Thereafter, he performed his vascular fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Before coming to Denver in 1995, he worked for ten years at the Guthrie Clinic in Upstate Pennsylvania. There he practiced vascular surgery and was clinical professor of surgery at SUNY and Hahnemann Universities. At the Guthrie Clinic, he participated in the education and training of general surgical residents in a free standing approved surgical residency program. He is board certified in both vascular and general surgery and is fellowship trained in trauma. Here in Denver, Dr. Annest sees patients with all forms of arterial and venous disease, practices in the Denver Wound Healing Clinic, and travels as an outreach physician to vascular clinics in Kansas and Colorado. He receives patients from across the country suffering from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. He has been a national lecturer on that subject and has participated in an innovative and promising approach to treat patients with recurrent brachial plexus problems after thoracic outlet surgery. Dr. Annest has been married to his wife, Carol, since 1972. He is father to three incredible children and has 6 grandchildren. He likes to golf and ski and attends Lookout Mountain Community Church.

Dr Alan Synn

Biography:
Dr. Synn is one of the founding members of the Vascular Institute of the Rockies. His clinical interests span the full breadth of vascular surgery. His special capabilities include complex arterial surgery and endovascular therapies, particularly the endograft treatment of aortic aneurysms. In addition to taking care of patients, Dr. Synn is a scientific investigator and instructor for medical students and trainees. Dr. Synn is a native Californian and graduate of Stanford University and the U.C.L.A. School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle and his vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa. He was on the faculty in vascular surgery at Iowa. His research work has been published in the areas of complex leg artery bypass surgeries, the noninvasive vascular lab, arteriography, carotid arterial reconstructions, venous disease, thrombolysis, and thoracic outlet surgery. He spent two years in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona before arriving in Denver in 1995. “There is so much that we can do to help the patient with vascular disease. It is really exciting to work with each patient and their primary physician. Every patient’s situation is unique and we get to tailor the best individual solution.” Dr. Synn is dedicated to both his patients and his medical community. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery. He is the Past President of both the Denver Medical Society as well as the Rocky Mountain Vascular Surgical Society. His efforts have included participating and overseeing in over a dozen hospital and professional society committees, advocating with the Legislature, and promoting health care improvement. “Physician responsibility means putting our patients first in all that we do as we improve our system of care.” Dr. Synn has been recognized three times by his peers as a 5280 “Top Doc”. Outside of the hospital and office, Dr. Synn, his two children, and his wife Lisa enjoy a family centered life. “We fish, camp, and even read together. I’ll still pick up a baseball bat now and again for my son. As long as the family is well, life is really wonderful.”

Dr Lisa Nowak

Biography:
Dr. Nowak joined the Vascular Institute of the Rockies in 2000. She is widely experienced, having practiced as a trauma surgeon in Pittsburgh before moving to the University of Iowa for a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery. She is board certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Her research at the University of Iowa focused on re-operative carotid surgery results and outcomes assessment and quality of life evaluation in Thoracic Outlet Patients. Dr. Nowak provides personal care tailored to each patients unique situation. She works with her patients and their primary physicians to find treatment plans that are optimal. She is dedicated to preserving her patients quality of life. She is committed to educating her patients about their condition so that they can enter in a partnership with her for their vascular health care. She works well with referring physicians, as they are an important part of her patient's continuing care.
