Dr Richard Birch

Biography:
I studied medicine at Nottingham University and got my Bachelor of Medical Science degree in 1993, two years later, in 1995, I graduated as a doctor. I decided to become a general practitioner and passed my MRCGP with merit five years later in 2000, I then spent the next 10 years working for the NHS in general practice. During my time as a medical student and in the following years as a qualified practicing doctor, I became more and more aware that, what we all know as conventional medicine, does not have all the answers to what ails us. I studied Homeopathy and passed the Faculty of Homeopathy exam in 2003, this allowed me to use homeopathy as a GP. My interest in a more alternative, holistic approach to treating many of the problems that I saw regularly in general practice, continued to grow and after experiencing the benefits of acupuncture myself, I decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I studied under Maria Mercati in Cheltenham and completed my acupuncture training in 2013. I originally studied medicine in order to help my patients “get well” and I have found a way of doing that by using acupuncture. It was always my intention to use acupuncture in my work as a GP but, having seen the huge benefits that it brings to people, with wide ranging health problems, I decided to dedicate my life to treating people this way. I have never been happier, acupuncture is great, it gives excellent results, my patients benefit and I love my work. Now, I only treat patients using acupuncture. It is fulfilling and I have sufficient time in each consultation to get a clear picture of the situation each patient presents with and form a good treatment plan for them. Investing this time in each patient is in my opinion crucial. I have always sought to assist people in taking more control of their health and their life, by investing time with each patient I can, with the use of acupuncture hopefully achieve this. My training and experience of both Western and Eastern theories dovetail in a very positive way which, makes me very well placed to work alongside and complement your “conventional” medical team.
